Island Hopping from Phuket: Where to Go and How to Do It Well

Phuket is wonderful, but some of the best days you will have here are spent away from it, out on the Andaman Sea among the islands. Island hopping from Phuket is the reason many people fall for this part of Thailand, and the difference between a brilliant day and a crowded, exhausting one comes down to where you go and how you do it. Here is a guide to both.

Why base yourself in Phuket

Phuket sits at the centre of a remarkable cluster of islands, which is exactly what makes it such a good base. The famous bays and the quiet hidden ones are all within reach of a day on the water, and you return each evening to comfort rather than roughing it. Stay somewhere restful with oceanfront villas, set out for the islands by day, and you get the best of both worlds.

The classics, and why they earn the name

Some places are popular for good reason. The Phi Phi Islands deliver the postcard: dramatic cliffs, clear water and beaches that look unreal. Phang Nga Bay, with its limestone karsts rising from calm green water and the famous James Bond Island, is unlike anywhere else. Closer in, Coral Island and Racha Island offer easy snorkelling and swimming. If it is your first time, these are worth the crowds.

Going quieter

Once you have seen the classics, the real magic is in the quieter corners. The Similan Islands, open roughly from late October to May, are among the finest in the region for clear water and marine life. Smaller, less-visited islands reward anyone willing to go a little further or set off a little earlier. The simplest trick for any island is timing: arrive before or after the day-trip crowds and you will barely recognise the place.

Private versus shared

How you go shapes the day as much as where. A shared tour is the budget option and comes with fixed timings and a full boat. A private charter costs more but hands you the day: your route, your pace, the quiet bays the big boats skip, and lunch on your own schedule. For a special trip, or simply to avoid the crowds, private is almost always worth it.

Setting off from Kata Rocks

Kata Rocks sits on the cliffs above Kata Beach, looking out over the very sea you will be exploring, which makes it a natural base for days out among the islands. Our team can arrange charters and excursions tailored to what you want from the day, from the famous bays to the quiet ones.

If island days are part of your trip, explore our oceanfront villas as your base and let us take care of the rest.
