Both Kata beach and Kata Noi beach are around the Laem Sai headland from Karon Beach. Of the two beaches, Kata Yai (big Kata) is more popular and known for its soft, super fine white sand and turquoise blue water of the Andaman Sea.
Surfing at Kata Beach in Phuket is a great low season activity and there are two surf shops and multiple beach outlets where you can rent a board per hour, by the day or weekly. The southern end of the beach has the best waves gets crowded at times but the atmosphere remains friendly. Just off the same area is a Flow Rider wave simulator machine at Phuket Surf House.
Shopping in Kata is also world class with several distinct shopping malls that feel somewhat like open air bazaars. Kata shoppers tend to come out after dinner when it’s coolest and those who decide to shop during the day will have the shops pretty much to themselves. There are many international quality luxury boutiques, heaps of street stalls, and numerous shops to haggle over prices in a friendly manner. So it’s a buyer’s market in more ways than one.
