Two beaches, not one
Kata actually has two beaches, and knowing the difference helps. Kata Beach itself is the larger and livelier of the pair, with soft sand, swimming and a string of places to eat behind it. Surf, in the right season
From roughly May to October, the monsoon swell turns Kata into one of Phuket’s friendliest places to surf. Boards are easy to hire, lessons are widely available, and the waves are forgiving enough for beginners while still fun for the more experienced. In the calmer, drier months the sea flattens out and the beach returns to easy swimming, so the season shapes the day.
The viewpoint worth the trip
Just south of Kata, the Karon viewpoint, often called the Kata viewpoint, looks out over three bays at once: Kata Noi, Kata and Karon. It is one of the finest views on the island and a near-compulsory stop, particularly toward sunset. Go a little before the light drops, and bring a camera that does the colours justice.
Eating and sundowners
Kata eats well, from simple local Thai kitchens to relaxed beachfront spots and refined oceanfront dining up on the cliffs. The ritual worth keeping is the sundowner: a drink somewhere with a view of the Andaman Sea as the day ends. It costs nothing to plan and is, for many people, the single best thing to do in Kata, every evening of the trip.

From the sand to the sky
Ska Bar
At the far southern end of Kata Beach, where the sand gives way to rock, a driftwood bar has grown up around a banyan tree. Flags overhead, bare feet, a cold beer as the sun drops behind the headland, and fire dancers once the light has gone. It is not refined and it does not need to be. This is the sundowner Kata has been doing for thirty years, and it is still the one people describe first when they get home.

Mom Tri’s Kitchen at Villa Royale
The other end of the register, and the address most people here will name if you ask where to take someone. Multi-level terraces descend through tropical gardens to the rocks above Kata Noi, with an open-air terrace, a traditional Thai sala, and a pianist through dinner service. The kitchen runs two executive chefs, one Thai and one Western, which gives the menu genuine depth in both directions. The cellar holds more than 750 labels and has taken the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for eight consecutive years. Happy hour at the Sala Lounge runs from five to seven, which is precisely the right window. Book the terrace, and book it early in high season.

The Sundeck
Halfway up the hill road above Kata Noi, unmissable for the wide white awning over the roadside. Arrive on the bar floor, then take the stairs down to the dining terrace, where glass balconies put the whole bay in front of you with nothing in the way. The cooking leans Mediterranean, gourmet pizzas and burgers alongside a proper selection of Thai dishes, and the sangria has a reputation of its own. Lounge and house music runs through the evening, with DJ sets on occasion. Open from late morning, but the hour before sunset is the one to book.

DOXA Skybar at Fira Phuket
Higher again, and a different mood entirely. DOXA sits on the second level of the Fira complex, reached by a skywalk and floating just above the pool, with the Andaman laid out end to end. Doors open at four, which tells you exactly what it is for. The cocktail programme is the serious kind, and seating runs from sky sofas on the sunset edge to bar stools with a front-row view of the pour. Come for the sunset, stay for the hour after it, which is quietly the better one.

Thai Thai, Karon
New to Karon and already the sort of room people settle into. Thai Thai leans into retro Thai character, bold and unfussy, with a menu built for sharing: betel leaf wraps layered with fresh herbs and toasted dried shrimp, grilled chicken with turmeric, wok-fried prawns with cashew nuts, red duck curry with young jackfruit. Seasonal and locally sourced where possible, with vegetarian and halal-friendly options throughout. Seating for 56 across indoor and outdoor spaces makes it a good call for a group or a celebration. The Clubhouse at Kata Rocks
Ours, and open to everyone, which is the reason it belongs on this list. The Clubhouse sits on the oceanfront at the northern end of Kata Beach, tables running the length of the infinity pool, floor-to-ceiling glass framing the Andaman with nothing between you and the horizon. The kitchen works seasonally across Mediterranean and Thai, built on local produce and Andaman seafood, from shared tapas at sunset through to a full dinner. There is a signature Kata Rocks gin behind the bar and live musician all evenings. As the light goes, the pool lights come up and the room changes character entirely, which is why it is so often named among the most romantic tables in Phuket.
