The Racha Islands Phuket (also known as Koh Raya) are best known for excellent diving and popular snorkelling daytrip excursions. However, the larger Racha Yai has quickly developed with bungalow and resorts recently making it popular for overnight stays.
Racha Yai’s clear waters are perfect for snorkelling, though its main ‘Bungalow Bay’ is often packed with speed boats in the afternoon. Racha Yai’s other large bay, Ao Siam, is quieter and getting away from the teaming tourism masses is possible.
It takes about 10-12 minutes to walk from Bungalow Bay to Siam Beach on the other side of the island and exploring the island on foot is one of its unique charms.
Nearby smaller Racha Noi island is uninhabited and has no accommodation, but there are great dive and snorkeling spots located just offshore.
Getting to Racha islands is relatively easy with dive boats, fishing boats, and large tourist excursion boats taking between one to three hours depending on the time of year (longer in the monsoon season). Longtail boats can be chartered from December to April when wind and waves tend to be mild, however travel time can be over two hours in the calmest of seas.
Racha islands is ideally suited for a day trip by rib with its clear blue waters and coral reefs. It is also one of the top fishing locations in Phuket. Natural reefs are teeming with tropical fish; barracuda, octopus and dolphins are often spotted at Racha Islands.
